Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan visited Bhendi Bazaar in South Mumbai on Wednesday to get acquainted with the Rs 1,500-crore redevelopment project set to begin soon. The Bhendi Bazaar project involves the demolition and reconstruction of 250 cessed and dilapidated buildings in the area to be undertaken by the Saifee Burhani Trust.

As many as 4,237 tenants will get a minimum of 300-sq ft houses. The developers will have to set up a corpus fund for 10 years so that the tenants do not have to bear the cost of maintenance after the construction. The developer will have to pay Rs 5,000 per sq m as development tax to the municipal corporation to develop basic infrastructure in the locality

“The agenda today was to acquaint the Chief Minister with the area and the project. It is a unique urban renewal project that will actually see improvement in amenities and more open spaces,” said Union Minister and local MP Milind Deora. “Although this project is special because it is undertaken by a trust and is not for profit, the scheme can be a model of renewal not just for other projects in Mumbai, but for Maharashtra and other urban areas.”
