ABOUT

On 29th December 1956, the Anjuman-e-Shiate Ali was formed in Bombay to organize the 1400th birth anniversary celebration of Moulana Ameer ul-Mumenin Ali Ibn Abi Talib (AS), on the 13th of Rajab 1376 AH.

Al-Muqaddas Dr. Syedna Taher Saifuddin, 51st Dai al-Mutlaq of fragrant and cherished memory, deemed it to be in the best interest of the Dawoodi Bohra Jamaat of Bombay to have an association for the better management of the affairs of the Dawoodi Bohra Jamaat of Bombay and for securing the full benefits of organized community life.

In pursuance of that resolve al-Muqaddas 51st Dai al-Mutlaq, was pleased to announce that the Anjuman-e-Shiate Ali formed on 29th of December 1956, shall form the nucleus of the proposed association of the Dawoodi Bohra Jamaat of Bombay and was pleased to nominate the members of that Anjuman and grant it a written Constitution (memorandum and Rules and Regulations) framed by 51st Dai al-Mutlaq which was duly adopted at a meeting of the Anjuman-e-Shiate Ali on 14th August ,1957.

During the incumbency of 51st Dai al-Mutlaq and later of his mansoos and successor, 52nd Dai al-Mutlaq, His holiness Dr Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin Saheb (TUS), the constitution was amended suitably from time to time, to meet the need of increasing responsibilities and duties and growing management and administration requirements.

His Holiness Dr Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin Saheb (TUS) acceded to the august office of al-Dai al-Mutlaq, as the 52nd incumbent, on 19th rajab 1385 AH (13th November 1965). The beloved son and successor, was closely and intimately associated with the life and times of his honoured and revered father. HE had personally shared in the great flood of challenges and problems that were successfully faced and resolved, throughout the long fifty three years of the Golden Saifee Era which saw the fulfillment of historic expectations. Naturally therefore, Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin decided to build a Masjid and a mausoleum, as a mark of eternal love and gratitude, to one whose brilliant stewardship gave the community a pride of place, fame and honor on an international level.

Raudat Tahera was edifice, in bricks, mortar and marble, which manifested in its features the theme of piety and purity that marked Syedna Taher Saifuddin’s epoch and which in its architecture, incorporates the ancient and historic Fatimi art. Raudat Tahera is also unique, in that, the entire Quran is inscribed in letters of gold, on the inner walls of the mausoleum.

Raudat Tahera was inaugurated by His Excellency Fakruddin Ali Ahmed, then President of India, on the April 1975. Preparatory to that historic event, Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin, convened at Bombay in the year 1394 AH, Mujtama ul-Khair, a gathering,to receive a programme of five principles, intended to:-

  • Strenghten Aqeedah and Deen.
  • Promote and froster correct upbringing and education.
  • Demarcate the limits of trade and economic activity, permitted by Deen.
  • Define service to ibadullah,
  • Guide the setting up of imarat ud-duniya wal-Aakhirah.

In the year 1399 AH, His Holiness Dr Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin Saheb (TUS) apprehended that the end of one century and the beginning of another, had to be the occasion for the renewal of a Muslim’s profound commitment to the fundamental beliefs and concepts of Islam; a commitment to strive for the re-emergence of the dynamic Fatimi civilization; and a sense of destiny to attain higher levels of excellence in the observance and khidmat of Islam, and the occasion had to be made a shining landmark in the annals of Dawat and its history.

Accordingly, in that year, in the month of Moharram al-haram, Dr Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin (tus) convened at surat al-Mutlaq al-Ftemai ul-ilmi. The vast concourse heard their beloved Dai and leader say :-

“Islam is the religion chosen by Allah and perfected by him. He gave it to mankind as an infallible faith to mark His favour for creation. This Islam is a set of eternal and timeless rules which takes into consideration actual and potential needs of all times to come. It takes in its stride all possible situations as and when they arise.

Hamd be for him – the glorified One – that He made us from amongst those who hold steadfast to Hablullah, one end of which is held by him and the other by us, that is by every Dai, who by permission of Allah, calls and guides towards Allah and his Vali, and protects us from every evil and evil monger who desires our fall. The Dai guides us to the meaning of Allah’s word.

Hamd be for him – the exalted one – Who provides, under the benign umbrella of Islam, which is the superior most of all divine religions, guidance which guarantees for us a rich harvest in this world and the hereafter. He has showered the blessings if His grace upon us by making His Deen perfect for us, by completing His favour for us made us, from those in whose hearts He inscribed the faith and fortified us by his spirit. He distinguished us in Creation, by enacting the Shariat of Islam, by placing us within the fold of the Fatimi Dawat and subjecting us to the eternal gaze and watch of the uqool.

Allah – the glorified one – made the Fatimi Dawat, a refuge for us, from all the emanates from time to time during the exigencies and vicissitudes of time. Allah’s Dawat is founded on revelation descending from heavens. Its connotation is fortified by al-Quran. Its form id fashioned by the divine Sharait and made significant by the divine mysticism enshrined in that Shariat. Dawat’s courtyard is honored and embellished by him.

We give thanks to Allah for His great bounty in providing for us shelter in the bosom of Dawat.

We shall always remember Allah, the Glorified and exalted One and the progeny of an-Nabi (SA).

I urge the faithful believers, to carefully study that which the noble Fatimi hudat have prescribed for a pure and happy life in this world and for emancipation in the hereafter, leading to an eternal blissful life.

I have called you together at this Mutlaq and to provide through it, for you, the sustenance which will nourish you in preparation for the ultimate goal of salvation.

I foresee for this Mutlaq a position of eminence today and for tomorrow. It shall open the gates of guidance and provide the wherewithal to discharge the duty of obedience to Allah, His-Nabi and Ullul – Amar.

I urge the faithful believers who have rallied round the banner of this Mutlaq to properly comprehend the legacy which the noble Fatema Hudat has bequeathed and to strive for Akhirat”.

In the month of Zilqadah 1399 AH followed another gathering, the “Ijtimao mousam-il-barakaat”. Addressing the assembly, 52nd Dai al-Mutlaq said :-

“The 14th century is coming to a close and the 15th century is about to commence. O this occasion, in order to ensure that in the future, muslimeen may benefit in greater measure from the barakaat of Islam and iman and to promote a new awakening , seven usool are delineated”,viz:-
